04 — New to the Sport?

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art — no punches, no kicks. You learn to control an opponent and win with leverage, timing, and technique, which is why a smaller person can handle a bigger, stronger one. It’s often called “the gentle art,” and it’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

Learn What BJJ Is All About
For Kids

Confidence that carries off the mat

Kids build discipline, focus, coordination, and real anti-bullying confidence — in a structured class where respect comes first.

For Adults

A sport, a workout, a community

Millions of adults train BJJ for the same reasons: the best workout they’ve ever had, a skill that never stops growing, and teammates who become friends.

For Everyone

No experience needed — ever

Every black belt started with a first class. Whether you’re 4 or 64, you start at your own pace with coaches guiding every step — right here in Glen Cove, on Long Island’s North Shore.

05 — What We Teach

Programs for every level.

A curriculum for all levels and all ages. Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the very first time or sharpening a competition game, there’s a class built for you — adults from absolute beginner to advanced, dedicated no-gi grappling, and structured programs for kids, juniors, and teens. Train at your pace, with a clear path from your first day to your next belt.

06 — On the Mat

What our students gain.

Most people start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense — but then they stay for something much greater.

Real self-defense that sticks

Trained against live resistance, not theory. The skill is tested every class.

Conditioning that transfers

Grip, core, cardio, composure. The body you build here works everywhere else.

A family away from home

You’ll know every name in the room within a month. That is the room.

Focus, discipline & confidence

An hour of total presence. Kids carry the focus into the classroom, adults into the workday — everyone leaves steadier than they came in.

A community that trains together

Open mats, belt promotions, and long hours of drilling side by side. Some of the closest friendships you’ll make are forged right here on the mat — and they tend to last well beyond it.

A belt path with integrity

No buying stripes. No rushed promotions. Ranks under the Soca banner are earned on the mat.

07 — The Lineage

Taught in the tradition
of a legend.

08 — Team Affiliation

One team.
One R1NG.

Our academy competes as part of R1NG — a worldwide competition-team alliance founded in 2019 by Professor Soca and a circle of world-champion friends, including Roberto “Gordo” Corrêa, creator of the modern half guard.

The idea is simple: academies like ours join forces under one banner, so our students stand alongside teammates from around the world at IBJJF tournaments — and compete for the team trophies the biggest associations chase.

16 — FAQ

Before your
first class.

Still have a question? Text or email us — Professor Ron answers every one personally.

What should I wear to my first class?+

Athletic shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. Rashguards are encouraged but not required. We’ll provide a loaner gi for your free intro so you get the real experience.

Do I need a gi to start?+

Not for your first class — we’ve got you covered. Once you’re signed up we’ll point you to our team gi program. Most new students buy one within their first two weeks.

How often should I train?+

Two times a week is the minimum pace where you’ll feel real improvement. Three to four is the sweet spot for most adult students. More is always welcome.

How old do kids need to be?+

Mini Grapplers starts at age 4. Juniors is 8–14. If your kid is 7, we’ll try them in both and pick the class where they thrive.

Is BJJ safe?+

BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for long-term training because everything is done with a partner, with a tap, and under supervision. We teach new students how to stay safe before we teach them anything else.

How does pricing work?+

Unlimited monthly memberships for adults and kids, with family and multi-member discounts. Exact pricing is shared at your free intro — it’s easier in person than in an email.

What happens at the free intro class?+

You’ll warm up with the class, learn one or two fundamental techniques, drill them with a coach-paired partner, and watch a round or two of rolling. Thirty to sixty minutes total. No pressure, no sales pitch.
